Joining Hands - Lesotho

Los Ranchos Presbytery has been invited to form a relationship with the people of Lesotho through a fairly new program called “Joining Hands.”  This is a way of doing mission (part of the Presbyterian Hunger Program) where we work together, building relationships, in order to find ways to end hunger and other real problems that result from hunger. Several churches in our Presbytery, including TPC, have joined this network. Six people, including Pam Roeth and our pastor, Rebecca Prichard, from TPC, visited Lesotho in the spring of 2006. Some pictures from their trip are shown below.  We look forward to learning more about the nation and people of  Lesotho.  Together we will pray and support this network.

Welcome, Lesotho Friends!

For over two years now, our congregation has been a part of Joining Hands—Lesotho.  This means that we are part of a network of churches in Los Ranchos Presbytery who are in partnership with a larger network of people, churches and organizations in the “Mountain Kingdom” of Lesotho.  Ours is one of nine Joining Hands networks within the PCUSA.  In the Spring of 2006 our pastor, Rebecca Prichard, and Pam Roeth traveled to Lesotho with four others from our Presbytery.  In the Fall of 2007, Pam spent two months in Lesotho as our very own “missionary.”  We have supported and encouraged this partnership in many ways:

  • We have sent books to our friends in Lesotho, and to a library in Maseru.

  • We have supported “Jewels for Hope,” a creative ministry supporting HIV/AIDS families and children.

  • Members of our church have participated in a book group, studying and discussing some of the economic issues facing people in Africa in general and Lesotho in particular.

  • Members of our church have faithfully taken part in the Joining Hands network in our Presbytery.

  • Pam and Rebecca have shared their stories and their pictures with us and with other churches in the Presbytery.

This summer we had a fabulous opportunity to take this relationship to the next level.  In July, T.M.S. Letela and Mali Majara were with us in Southern California.  They joined Pam, Rebecca and others in a gathering of all the Joining Hands networks in the PCUSA, including guests from South Africa, Peru, Palestine and the other countries represented.  They also took part in the Peacemaking Conference at Chapman College.  From July 19 – July 29 took time to relax, to build on their relationship with us, and to learn about the things that matter to us here in Orange County.

God's Global Economy Book Group

TPC  members and friends are welcome to take part in a book discussion group that is part of the Joining Hands—Lesotho follow-up.  Some of us are eager to learn more about global economics and have agreed to meet together and read up on the subject.  Watch for an announcement about our next meeting.
