Chancel Choir Concert
What are you doing at 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon, June 1?
The perfect response would be, “I’m attending a concert at Tustin Presbyterian Church given by their choir, soloists and organist.”
This concert will be very special. It will be the last time for those in attendance to have the privilege of hearing Aram Barsamian perform the solos in Ralph Vaughan William’s Five Mystical Songs, a work written for baritone soloist and chorus. Aram, or “Rami” as we all know him, has been our bass soloist for the past five years. He will be leaving as of this concert to pursue his career in opera. We certainly will miss Aram. But, we are grateful to have had him with us for the past five years, and we all wish him the very best as he moves onward and upward in the field of opera performance.
Another special that afternoon will be an opportunity to hear the magnificence of the Wicks pipe organ, with David Koehring, our church organist, at the console. Both major works will be accompanied by our newly-renovated organ, and will be, for the first time since permanently moved to the center of the choir loft, be in full view on the top step of the chancel. TPC is blessed to have such a magnificent instrument to lead us week after week in the worship of God. This concert will “push the envelope” regarding the use of all the colors of the instrument.
Included in the concert will be a performance of Zoltan Kodaly’s Missa Brevis, a work written in 1943-1944 in the basement of a convent while Kodaly and his wife hid from the German soldiers. It is one of the most lyrical short masses written for choir, soloists and organ, using a combination of Gregorian chant and Hungarian folk music. It will leave a lasting impression on your heart after hearing it.
There will be two shorter pieces on the program, but you must plan to attend in order to find out what they are. You won’t be disappointed!
