Associate Pastor's Message

There’s been a lot of racket here at church this summer.  Actually, it started back in the spring, when the kind, talented and dedicated people at Pacific Westline refurbished our Youth Lounge.  Then a bunch of guys came through over a period of three days and replaced most of the light bulbs in our church buildings – courtesy of an energy saving grant obtained by our Green Task Force.  Next, KB Construction came by and knocked the railings and stairways off of our Christian Education building.  Right now, I can hear them hammering as they start to install the new, safer railings.

I don’t find this racket annoying.  In fact, I find it incredibly exciting.  This congregation is nearing the end of an incredibly successful capital campaign.  As a demonstration of our commitment to the work of Christ’s church, we dedicated 20% of the pledged funds to mission.  But I think the other 80% is going to mission as well.  When we refresh our sanctuary, renew our Youth Lounge and make the stairways and railings of our CE buildings safer, we provide a sturdy springboard for the ministries that take place inside those spaces.  The quality of work says we care about the people – members of our church and visitors to our campus - who use our campus as a home.  When we choose to maintain the beauty and style of the original construction, we’re saying we care about tradition.  When we swap out old light bulbs and fixtures for energy saving models, we say we care about the environment, and we are seeking to be careful stewards of the money our members give to this congregation.

In the way we build (and rebuild) the church, we shape its character and its life.  It is one way we say who we hare, what we care about, and what one may expect within our bounds.  I’m proud to serve a church whose members are dedicated enough to give so generously to this important work.  I’m pleased that a good portion of those funds has been used to make the spaces where our children and youth gather safe and attractive.  If a picture speaks a thousand words, how much more does a three-dimensional building say?  Believe me, our kids are listening!
