The Lenten Journey at TPC

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 9.  For forty days we walk with Jesus through the wilderness toward the cross.  Lent is a time of inward reflection, repentance, forgiveness, and spiritual preparation.  During Lent we think more deeply about what it means to be disciples of Jesus Christ, to be changed into his likeness, and to follow him step by step.  Together we will observe Lent in the following ways:

Ash Wednesday Worship

Wednesday, March 9, 7:30 p.m.

We will gather in the sanctuary for this contemplative service.  Our worship will include silence, singing, scripture, and the imposition of ashes and communion.

Lenten Wednesday Evenings

Our Lenten journey will include contemplative times on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.:

March 16 – Labyrinth Walking

March 23 – Prayers for Wholeness

March 30 – Labyrinth Walking

April 6 – Prayers for Peace

April 13 – Labyrinth Walking

On March 16, March 30, and April 13, our Fellowship Hall labyrinth will be available for quiet walking from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  A representative of the worship committee will be present to orient you to the labyrinth.  Candles and music will set the mood, but there will be no liturgy.

On March 23 and April 6, we will gather in the sanctuary for sung prayer and contemplative worship.

Lenten pilgrims are also invited to attend our LOGOS dinners on those Wednesdays.  Please, call the church office if you would like us to set a place for you.

Lenten Sunday Worship

Sundays, March 13, March 20,

March 27, April 3, and April 10

9:30 a.m.

These services will have a confessional theme, the Paschal candle will be removed from the sanctuary, and purple colors will be prominent.  Our music and worship will focus on the Lenten Journey as we move toward Holy Week.  Communion will be observed on March 20 and April 3.  See below for more information.

Lenten Study Series

Sundays, March 13, March 20,

March 27, April 3, and April 10

11:00 a.m.

Following worship during Lent, our Pastor will lead a series on Celtic Spirituality using Philip Newell's book,  The Book of Creation: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality.  Classes will be in the Fireside Lounge at 11:00 a.m. on Sundays after worship.

Lenten Devotionals

Lent is a time when we nurture our relationship with God.  Copies of The Book of Creation, by Philip Newell, will be available on the patio after worship.  The Christian Education Committee hopes this will be a way to deepen your life of prayer.

Lenten Evensong

Sunday, March 27, 4:00 p.m.

Our Chancel Choir will lead us in a service of evening prayer that sets the tone for the Lenten Season.

Holy Week Worship Schedule

Palm/Passion Sunday Worship

 Sunday, April 17, 9:30 a.m.

This service remembers the stories of the last week of Jesus' life.  We will begin on the steps of our church with a joyful Palm Sunday Procession.

Maundy Thursday Worship

Communion and Tenebrae

Thursday, April 21, 7:30 p.m.

We will remember our Lord’s Last Supper in a special service of communion.  This moving service culminates in the stripping of the church and the extinguishing of the lights at Tenebrae.

Good Friday Community Service

Friday, April 22, 12 noon

We will join with our neighbors in an ecumenical Good Friday Communion Service.  This year's service will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1221 Wass St., Tustin, CA.

The Great Vigil of Easter

Saturday, April 23, 7:00 p.m.

We begin our celebration of Christ’s Resurrection at this dramatic service.  During this service we move from darkness to light, we celebrate both sacraments, we remember our salvation history, and we welcome new members into our church.  The service is led largely by our children and youth.  If you have never taken part in the Vigil, please plan now to be there.

Easter Sunday Festival Worship

Sunday, April 24, 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

This is the most important day of the year for us as Christians.  With joyful music, brass instruments, and great celebration we rejoice in the Resurrection of our Lord and Christ’s victory over death.

Lenten Longings

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and leads us toward Holy Week and finally to Easter.  Our Lenten lessons invite us to ponder our deepest desires and longings.  Some might say that sin is desire gone wrong.  Our spiritual challenge is to allow our desires to be transformed by the grace of God, so that we want what God wants.  For the five Sundays leading up to Palm Sunday, we will consider some of our deep desires in light of the Scriptures before us.

Lent is in part about obedience.  The grace of God moves us to obey.  In our Sunday Lenten worship, we will meditate on the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments, as a way of thinking about obedience.

March 13:     The stories of Eden and of Jesus’ temptation

will help us think about “Desire.”

March 20:     Abraham and Nicodemus

will help us think about “Home.”

March 27:     Moses, the Israelites and the Woman at the Well

will help us think about “Thirst.”

April 3:          The Shepherd King, David, and a blind man

will help us think about “Looks.”

April 10:        Ezekiel, Mary, Martha and Lazarus

will help us think about “Hope.”
